Description of group:
The Case Management Working Group (CMWG) was created in 2003, at a time when there was little consensus on what combination therapies for malaria had to include. One of the major contributions of this Working Group was to generate agreement on artemisinine based combination therapies (ACT).

In November 2008, the 15th RBM Partnership Board meeting endorsed the revitalization of the RBM CMWG. The rationale for this decision was the recognition that there remain enormous challenges to scaling up timely access to effective treatment which is essential to achieving the RBM targets and Millennium Development Goals. At best, 20% of fever cases are managed within 20 hours with recommended treatment. The RBM Board "invited WHO to convene a first consultation of the reconstituted Case Management Working Group, based on the existing Terms of Reference, within the next 6 months, with the mandate of addressing the key challenges of malaria case management".

Since 2003, funding for malaria has increased. New actors have joined the Partnership's work on overcoming challenges to accessible treatment. With the launch of the Global Malaria Action Plan in September 2008, scaling up efforts to achieve the 2010 targets needs to be part of a long-term strategy for achieving the ultimate goal - elimination.

For further information please refer to the CMWG Revised Terms of Reference adopted at the 18th RBM Board meeting in May 2010.
