Nearly a third of all malaria affected countries on course for elimination over the next decade
A report, released by the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) on 17 October, just prior to the opening of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Malaria Forum in Seattle, revealed that an increasing number of countries are setting their sights on eliminating malaria, with three countries already certified as malaria-free by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the last 4 years.

Wide-scale trial of malaria vaccine produces promising results
The first results from a large-scale Phase III trial of the malaria vaccine candidate RTS,S, revealed that the vaccine provided young African children with significant protection against clinical and severe malaria with an acceptable safety and tolerability profile.

The Roll Back Malaria Partnership congratulates the Deputy Chair of the African -Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011.

RBM Harmonisation Working Group discusses strategic challenges ahead of upcoming Board meeting
RBM's Harmonisation Working Group (HWG) held a two-day meeting on 27 October in Geneva to review progress against planned targets and assess endemic countries' needs for partner support. Participants discussed key strategic challenges to be highlighted at the RBM Board meeting and the role of HWG post 2011.
