Tackling malaria in developing countries
Parlamentary Office
The tools to prevent and cure malaria exist, but
accurate knowledge of the malaria burden is limited. International collaboration has resulted in an increased awareness of the need to reduce the impact of malaria in the developing world. Funding is currently falling well short of the amount
that is required to combat malaria. New financing mechanisms may increase available aid, but political will is necessary to ensure that sufficient money is invested and put to best use. Key priorities are to ensure that people have access to
essential drugs and vector control and that there is also investment in infrastructure and health services. Continued research and development will be essential in ensuring that effective drugs, insecticides and vaccines will be available in the future.

Lessons learned in Home Management of Malaria
Implementation research in four African countries
TDR, 2007
ISBN: 978 92 4 1595 18 6
Studies on treatment-seeking behaviour have shown that most malaria episodes are first treated at home using shop-bought drugs. Part of the reason for this is poor access to, and the perceived poor performance of, the formal health services. These treatments are usually incorrect or suboptimal. Since the majority of children who die from malaria do so within 48 hours of onset of illness, the early use of effective antimalaria medicines close to the home can help to reduce the burden of the disease in sub-Saharan Africa and minimize the life-threatening consequences of treatment delays.

Controlling Malaria at Home
Role of Private Sector Increasingly Seen as Vital
PSI, December 2006
Malaria treatment at home — which malaria experts call "home-based management of malaria" (HMM) — is becoming a priority as countries strive to reach ambitious targets set by African heads of state in 2000, and the private sector can play an important role in rapidly increasing access to affordable and effective home malaria treatment. PSI, with its strong ties to the commercial sector, is well-positioned to support ministries of health to scale up this life-saving intervention.
