Malaria community applauds Clinton $1 billion a year pledge; invites other candidates to make malaria commitments

U.S. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton today pledged to expand the U.S. government commitment to malaria to US$1 billion a year if elected, setting the goal of ending malaria-related deaths in Africa by the end of her second term. The campaign said this funding would be in addition to U.S. government support of malaria control through the World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, which finances the majority of malaria control efforts around the world.

Global malaria community in Ethiopia to plan intensified battle against disease

World Bank Group Report on Malaria in Africa Highlights Progress Towards Goal of Significantly Reducing Malaria Deaths

A new World Bank report says in just two years nearly 20 million long lasting insecticidal nets and more than 15 million doses of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) are on course to be distributed under the World Bank Booster Program for Malaria Control in Africa. The Progress Report on the Booster Program for Malaria Control, says about 240 million people - including more than 42 million children under age five and nearly 10 million pregnant women - are in areas covered by the Booster Program projects.

Global Malaria Community Kick Starts Campaign to Secure Additional Resources

Roll Back Malaria, the global partnership to fight malaria, today launched a campaign to improve the quality of proposals from sub-Saharan African countries to the Global Fund. In 2006, just over one-quarter of all malaria control proposals submitted to the Global Fund from sub-Saharan African countries were considered worthy of financing by the Technical Review Panel, an independent expert panel assembled to assess the proposals.

Experts Discuss Malaria Research Strengthening in Africa

Experts, researchers and malaria control programme managers are meeting in Brazzaville from 26-30 March under the auspices of the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM), the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa. The five-day meeting brings together researchers, implementers, as well as WHO and its partners to exchange information on MIM-supported malaria research; discuss critical needs in capacity for malaria research, and identify mechanisms for strengthening MIM's role in supporting research capacity in Africa.
