Record Funding to improve the health and livelihoods of world's poorest populations
Berlin, 14 December 2007 - Donor countries today pledged a record US$ 25.1 billion for the World Bank to help overcome poverty in the world’s poorest countries. In total, the IDA15 replenishment will provide US$ 41.6 billion, an increase of US$ 9.5 billion over the previous replenishment (IDA14) which provided US$ 32.1 billion.

UN Special Rapporteur on Right to Health Calls on All Actors to Fulfil their Human Rights Duties in the Fight against Malaria
London, 11 December 2007 - On Human Rights Day, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, Professor Hunt, called for urgent monitoring and accountability and better coordination from all parties - developing and developed states, the international community, and the private and public actors, including pharmaceutical companies - to ensure the "Right to the highest attainable health" for all, and to fight malaria, a preventable and treatable disease that kills more than 1 million people every year.

International Colloquia on Malaria in the Mekong Region
Hanoi, 3-5 December 2007 - The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, in collaboration with the National Institute for Malaria Parasitology and Entomology (NIMPE) in Hanoi, organized its annual international colloquium in Vietnam from 3-5 December. The main objectives were to review the current malaria control situation in the Mekong region; identify remaining knowledge gaps; formulate strategies for the consolidation and extension of achievements; optimize measures to roll back forest and border malaria and examine ways to contain the spread of drug and insecticide resistance. Professor Awa Marie Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the RBM Partnership, and Dr Arata Kochi, Director of WHO's Global Malaria Programme gave key presentations at the meeting.

Malaria community applauds Clinton $1 billion a year pledge; invites other candidates to make malaria commitments
Addis Ababa, 29 November 2007 - U.S. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton today pledged to expand the U.S. government commitment to malaria to US$1 billion a year if elected, setting the goal of ending malaria-related deaths in Africa by the end of her second term. The campaign said this funding would be in addition to U.S. government support of malaria control through the World Bank and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, which finances the majority of malaria control efforts around the world.

13th Roll Back Malaria Partnership Board Meeting
Addis Ababa, 28 - 29 November 2007 - Health Ministers, heads of agencies, philanthropists, and many of the world's leading institutions in the global fight against malaria are meeting in Addis this week to endorse approaches to escalate malaria prevention, treatment and care and achieve high level coverage with malaria control over much of the African continent. Members of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Board, representing the malaria community worldwide, will examine comprehensive proposals to bring down the price of malaria treatments and engage all partners in an ambitious global business plan to finance an intensified battle against the disease.

Addressing the access gap in Uganda
The Ministry of Health (Uganda) and Medicines for Malaria Venture have joined forces in an attempt to address the critical access gap to effective antimalarials in Uganda, and turn the tide of death and disability from this disease. A jointly-convened series of four workshops was held from 26 September to 2 October 2007 to plan an operational research intervention to distribute a subsidised artemisinin-combination therapy (ACT) in 6 districts of Uganda.
The intervention attempts to demonstrate that universal availability of affordable ACTs will reduce mortality and morbidity from malaria in vulnerable populations in Uganda. It also aims to inform the planned Affordable Medicines Facility, malaria (AMFm) on the core set of supporting country level interventions.

Soon, nearly every family with children in Africa could have a bed net to protect against malaria
Geneva, 27 November 2007 - The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the world’s largest international financier of the fight against malaria, today announced that programs it supports have so far delivered 46 million bed nets to families at risk of contracting malaria, a 155 percent increase over last year's result of 18 million.

SADC malaria week welcomes launch of SARN
The Southern Africa Roll Back Malaria Network (SARN) was officially launched on the occasion of SADC malaria week, commemorated this year in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. SARN is the first sub-regional network that will be linked to a regional economic block, being hosted by SADC. SADC malaria week saw high-level strategic discussions on malaria elimination in the region as well as gala performances by RBM Goodwill Ambassador Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Zimbabwean superstar Oliver Mtukudzi.

Mosquito net usage by children reaches 85% in Tombouctou, Mali
Once synonymous with 'the end of the road', Tombouctou, and neighboring Gao, have dramatically increased coverage of children with long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) as a result of an integrated child survival campaign led by Mali’s Ministry of Health.

Arusha, 20-22 November 2007 - The Eastern Africa RBM Network (EARN) Annual Coordination for Implementation Support Meeting took place from 20-22 November 2007 in Arusha Tanzania. All-Party Parliamentary Malaria Group Calls for Strong Support to the Immediate Launch of An Affordable Medicines Facility for Malaria
London, 22 November 2007 - The All-Party Parliamentary Malaria Group (APPMG) launches its third report which looks at the case for a new facility mechanism for affordable malaria treatment. The Group's previous reports focused on the global malaria crisis and financing mechanisms to tackle the disease. "The Right Drug at the Right Time - The Power of the Affordable Medicines Facility - malaria (AMFm) to Save Lives" focuses on a fundamental gap in delivering effective malaria control to those most in need. Specifically, it looks at the potential of an Affordable Medicines Facility to bring down the price of artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) by ensuring widespread use and discouraging use of single drugs which may accelerate development of resistance to treatment.

Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria announces record figure of US $471 million for malaria
Geneva, 12 November 2007 - The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria today announced a total of US $471 million for malaria control over the next two years - the largest amount approved for malaria control in a single round of grant-making . Successful countries include Angola, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Chad, Guyana, Iran, Lao, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Pakistan, Sao Tome, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Suriname, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor Leste, Uganda, Vietnam, Yemen, and Zambia, with 62% of eligible malaria proposals recommended for funding. Of the total amount recommended for Round 7 for all three diseases (US$1,119 billion), grants for malaria represent 42%.

New innovation grants boost malaria advocacy efforts in Africa
London, 5 November 2007 - Malaria Consortium has announced three grants for malaria advocacy to civil society organizations covering twelve African countries. The Innovation Grants are part of Mobilising for Malaria, an advocacy programme supported by GlaxoSmithKline's African Malaria Partnership. They aim to boost advocacy efforts to improve Africa-to-Africa accountability for response to malaria suffering on the continent as well inspire African civil society organizations and media to become "leaders" in the fight against malaria in Francophone and Anglophone African countries.

Madagascar launches campaign to fight measles and malaria
22 October, Washington, DC - The government of Madagascar, in collaboration with international partners, is launching a national health campaign to vaccinate more than 2.8 million children against measles and distribute more than 1.5 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets to prevent the spread of malaria—diseases which take the lives of more than 1 million African children each year.
"By focusing the world's attention on malaria and working in a collaborative spirit, the international community is turning the corner in preventing malaria and improving the lives of children," said Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. "We are grateful to the government of Madagascar and all of our partners for showing what we can achieve together, and for bringing help and hope to the children of this country."

Benin launches a national health campaign
10 October, Ouidah, Benin - An integrated campaign to distribute mosquito nets, de-worming medication, and vitamin A was launched in Benin to reduce child mortality and morbidity. This initiative has rallied a large number of partners alongside the government of Benin, including the WHO, UNICEF, the World Bank, USAID, the European Union, French and Swiss development assistance, Soroptimist International, research institutions, civil society, non-governmental organizations, the public and private sectors, and the media.

Leadership Summit: A Shared Vision and Commitment
At the Leadership Summit held in Seattle at the Gates Malaria Forum on 16 and 17 October, leaders in the fight against malaria issued a joint statement reaffirming the need to scale up national malaria responses, with malaria control as the short-term goal and the full eradication of the disease as the long-term vision.

Malaria community meets in Seattle
16-18 October, Seattle - A unique malaria Forum organized by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has opened today in Seattle, where 250 participants fighting malaria in different capacities are now reviewing challenges and discussing the way forward in the global malaria response.
The contributions of top policy-makers, government officials, fund providers, scientists, business executives, technical experts and UN and NGO representatives attending the meeting will form the basis for the development of a Global Business Plan delineating what each partner must do over the next few years so that malaria-control interventions can be scaled up and the scourge eliminated as a public health threat.

World Bank Group Report on Malaria in Africa Highlights Progress Towards Goal of Significantly Reducing Malaria Deaths
11 October, Washington - A new World Bank report says in just two years nearly 20 million long lasting insecticidal nets and more than 15 million doses of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) are on course to be distributed under the World Bank Booster Program for Malaria Control in Africa.
The Progress Report on the Booster Program for Malaria Control, says about 240 million people — including more than 42 million children under age five and nearly 10 million pregnant women — are in areas covered by the Booster Program projects.

Roll Back Malaria Special Representative Princess Astrid of Belgium delivers insecticide-treated nets to primary school children
2 October, Dar es Salaam - Roll Back Malaria's Special Representative (HRH) Princess Astrid of Belgium handed out a thousand insecticide-treated nets to pupils at Sokoine Primary School yesterday during her four-day visit to Tanzania, a malaria-endemic country which has made important progress in fighting against this scourge. Accompanied by Dr Awa Marie Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the RBM Partnership, Princess Astrid has been talking to malaria patients, attending antenatal clinics, seeing Artemisia plantations and an insecticide-treated net factory in Dar es Salam and Arusha, near Kilimanjaro.

30 September, Dar es Salaam - Dr Coll-Seck spoke to local and international journalists at a visit to a Tanzanian school. The Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership reminded the world that "by stealing young lives, causing long-term neurological damage in children, and increasing rates of absenteeism among school children and their teachers, malaria is striking vicious, debilitating blows at Africa's most vulnerable population, and its most precious resource. Children are our future".

Roll Back Malaria Partnership Welcomes Donor Pledges Totaling US$9.7 billion for the Global Fund to Fight HIV AIDs, TB and Malaria
27 September, Berlin -"This is an excellent first step towards realising the US$18 billion needed by the Fund over the next three years," said Dr Awa Marie Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership. " To provide sustainable and predictable funding for countries' national AIDS, TB and Malaria programmes is one of our biggest challenges. Malaria alone needs over US$3 billion per year. Now is not the time to be conservative about our ambitions. Much progress is being made in malaria control and donors and partners alike can feel more confident knowing their investments are achieving results."
The Global Fund Replenishmant Conference also saw the launch of Germany's "Debt2Health" initiative to increase funding for HIV, TB and Malaria through debt cancellation. The German and Indonesian governments signed an agreement to cancel 50 million Euro of Indonesia's debt to finance national health programs.
Germany is the first donor country to support programs of the Global Fund through debt conversion. Over the next four years, Germany will mobilize a total of 200 million Euros for Global Fund health programs through the Debt2Health Initiative.

RBM Joins the International Community in Celebrating the First Anniversary of UNITAID
20 September, Geneva - The Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) today called for celebration of the first anniversary of UNITAID, an international drug purchase facility launched in September 2006. Hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNITAID continually works to reduce the cost of high-quality AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria drugs for populations in developing countries. RBM recognizes UNITAID’s work to increase access of malarial treatments to low-income populations.

WHO product testing of malaria rapid tests -
Expressions of interest from manufacturers for product submission
WHO is calling for expressions of interest for submission of antigen-detecting malaria rapid diagnostic tests to the WHO malaria diagnostics evaluation programme. Product testing will be undertaken at US CDC in Atlanta, USA, against a panel of wild-type, culture-derived and parasite-negative samples. Manufacturers intending to enter products into the programme are required to submit expressions of interest to WHO by October 19, 2007, in order to participate in the first round of product testing. The product testing programme is part of the joint WHO-FIND programme on quality assurance of malaria rapid diagnostic tests.

RBM Partnership Harmonized Workplan Meeting
12-13 September, Geneva - The Working Group co-chairs, partners from sub-regional networks, chair of the Executive Committee, and members of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Secretariat met to develop the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Harmonized workplan. This is the first joint RBM workplan, collectively prepared by all RBM Partnership structures. The harmonized workplan and budget support the five RBM operational targets for 2008, and will be submitted to the 13th Board meeting in November 2007 for adoption.

10-11 September, Geneva - The Harmonization Working Group met to develop a methodology to evaluate the support they provide to countries for their Global Fund round 7 proposals; to consolidate inputs for the overall RBM 2007-2008 workplan; to agree on an operating framework for the RBM HWG Early Warning System and the Malaria Implementation Support Team; and to define its role in the ACT subsidy roll out.

10 September, Paris - Dr Coll-Seck participated in a roundtable discussion at a conference organized by the Friends of the Global Fund Europe. Political decision makers, private sector representatives, and civil society groups attended sessions on maternal and child mortality, poverty and malaria, access to antimalarial commodities, and the role of the private sector in the fight against malaria. The conference highlighted the importance of partnership in providing access to the many effective tools for malaria treatment and prevention.

7 September, New York - GLAMOUR, the magazine that reaches one in every ten women in America, announced today that a series of limited edition t-shirts will be sold exclusively on Shopbop.com with profits to benefit Malaria No More. For every T-shirt purchased, Glamour and Malaria No More will donate three bed nets to women in Africa. Bed net manufacturer Sumitomo Chemical will match the donations, making it six bed nets for every t-shirt sold.

PSM working group has a strong role to play in country support

WHO releases new guidance on insecticide-treated mosquito nets
16 August 2007, Geneva/Nairobi -- The World Health Organization issued new global guidance for the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets to protect people from malaria. Estimated global resources needed to attain international malaria control goals
This paper, published in the August issue of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, presents the methods used to construct a model for estimating the total financial costs of scaling up malaria control over 2006-2015 to achieve internationally agreed objectives and targets for the 81 most heavily affected malaria-endemic countries of the world’s 107 malaria-endemic countries and territories. Pessimistic and optimistic scenarios with different assumptions about the effect of interventions on the needs for diagnosis and treatment provide upper and lower bounds of the estimation.

All-Party Parliamentary Malaria Group meeting on the ACT subsidy
18 July, London - A meeting was organized by the APPMG to inform British parliamentarians, those working in malaria in different capacities, and UK opinion makers about the global ACT subsidy. The global ACT subsidy aims to make artemisinin-based combination therapies affordable and available, and to ensure that they remain efficacious in the long-term. Prof Awa Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, explained how the subsidy will work. Other speakers included Sir Richard Peto (Academia), Dr Vinand Nantulya (FIND on diagnostics), and Dr Ian Boulton (GSK).

Under their guidance they drew up an inventory of bottlenecks and developed a results-oriented workplan and budget for 2008.

The global malaria response discussed at World Economic Forum on Africa held in Cape Town
At the "Putting a stop to malaria" session at the World Economic Forum on Africa recently held in Cape Town, participants discussed key success factors and challenges for scaling up the malaria response in endemic countries. "We need strong leadership if we are going to win this fight", said Dr Awa Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Secretariat. "We need partnerships--there is no sector that can do it on its own", she continued. Dr Coll-Seck also called for the "harmonization of policies" dealing with the fight against malaria, explaining that many of the failures in controlling malaria in the past can be linked to the lack of an integrated policy aimed at managing the disease.

The Roll Back Malaria Partnership welcomes G8 countries' pledge to work to enable the 30 highest malaria-prevalence countries in Africa to cut malaria deaths by half and expects firm commitment to the pledge to spend US$ 60 billion on malaria, TB, and HIV/AIDS. The fulfillment of this renewed commitment from the wealthiest nations is a crucial step in helping countries approach the health-related MDGs by 2015 and in ensuring a sustainable global response to the world's three major diseases.

African Communities Call on G8 to Honor Their Commitment to Fight Malaria
The newly-formed MAMA Africa (Mobilizing Against Malaria Across Africa) movement calls on G8 leaders to take further action and help stop needless deaths from malaria. As a network that unites national anti-malaria coalitions from Ethiopia, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia, the MAMA Africa movement states that funding alone is not enough to win the ongoing struggle against malaria. While major donors have boosted funding for insecticide-treated bed nets and medications, these vital resources often fail to reach the poor and marginalized communities who need them most, due to inefficient delivery systems and lack of human resources at local level.

Le nouveau mouvement MAMA Afrique (Mobilizing Against Malaria Across Africa) demande aux chefs du G8 d'intensifier leurs actions contre le paludisme afin d'empêcher les décès inutiles causés par cette maladie. Ce réseau, qui réunit les coalitions nationales contre le paludisme de plusieurs pays y compris l'Ethiopie, le Cameroun, le Ghana, le Mali, le Kenya, l'Uganda, la Tanzanie et la Zambie, soutient que le financement seul ne suffit pas pour gagner la lutte contre le paludisme. Intensive workshop to improve Global Fund proposals for round 7 held in Nairobi
The Roll Back Malaria partnership completed in early June the second of three steps in a campaign to improve the quality of proposals from sub-Saharan African countries to the Global Fund by holding a "mock Technical Review" of over 24 country proposals. Over 120 participants were present, including representatives from 24 African countries and 20 experts from various organizations, including CDC, MACEPA, the Earth Institute, UNICEF, USAID, the World Bank and WHO.

Meeting in Dakar aims to improve private sector involvement in the global fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria
In cooperation with Global Fund, ILO, WHO, UNAIDS, Partners against AIDS, and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Secretariat, a West and Central Africa regional workshop was organized in Dakar to exchange experiences and develop country strategies in order to enhance private sector involvement in the response against the three major diseases. It brought together private sector stakeholders, finance institutions, workers, international agencies, professional associations, labour unions, and 18 countries from West and Central Africa.

Poverty reduction through intensified malaria control: The Islamic Development Bank (IDB) becomes a central Roll Back Malaria Partner in 10 focus countries
The Islamic Development Bank has embarked upon an ambitious "Quick Win" programme aimed at combating malaria in 10 highly malaria-endemic member countries. These are Burkina Faso, Chad, the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Sudan.
On 29 April 2007, the IDB approved an initial sum of $US 50 million to launch the first phase of this programme which will last two years. The programme adopts a comprehensive approach for malaria management encompassing integrated disease surveillance, training of manpower, provision of essential commodities, support for applied research, and monitoring and evaluation.
The Bank has also stated its intention to work in a coordinated manner with other actors, ensuring synergy and complementarity of efforts, and has thus positioned itself as a key Roll Back Malaria partner.

La Banque Islamique du Développement s'est engagée à financer un ambitieux programme de lutte contre le paludisme dans une dixaine de pays membres fortement affectés par cette maladie. Ces pays sont le Burkina Faso, la Gambie, la Guinée-Buissau, l'Indonésie, le Mali, la Mauritanie, le Niger, le Soudan, et le Tchad.
Le 29 Avril 2007, la BID a approuvé un montant initial de 50 millions de dollars des Etats Unis pour lancer la première phase de cette opération qui aura une durée de deux ans. Le programme adopte une approche compréhensive pour assurer la gestion du paludisme, englobant la surveillance intégrée de la maladie, la formation des effectifs, la provision de biens essentiels, le soutien à la recherche appliquée, et le suivi et l'évaluation.

Establishment of "World Malaria Day" - approved at 60th World Health Assembly (WHA)
The Roll Back Malaria Partnership welcomes the decision to establish World Malaria Day, a key element of Resolution WHA60.18 passed during the 60th WHA.
Member states agreed that greater awareness was needed and that the establishment of World Malaria Day would mobilize communities to get involved in the fight.
"There has been a strong call from many RBM Partners on this issue and we are delighted the world health community recognizes malaria as a global emergency that knows no borders. We look forward to working on the first World Malaria Day in 2008 with all countries and partners," stated the Executive Director of the RBM Partnership, Dr Awa Marie Coll-Seck.
Malaria Day shall be commemorated annually on 25 April or on such other day or days as individual member States may decide, in order to provide education and understanding of malaria as a global scourge that is preventable and a disease that is curable.

Tanzania: innovative communication campaign to raise awareness and promote understanding of the new malaria case management policy
Tanzania's national communication campaign for the new ACT policy uses multi-media tools including audio and video ads aired on television, radio, and via mobile video units throughout Tanzania, posters placed in all health facilities, an information kit targeted to medical professionals and influential leaders (e.g. members of parliament, religious leaders), a 30 minute documentary narrated by Julius Nyaisanga and engagement of national music stars.

12th RBM Partnership Board commends intensified support provided to countries by the RBM Harmonisation Working Group
Members of the RBM Partnership Board endorsed work currently underway to support grant proposal development for 19 African countries and also urged acceleration of implementation support that will assist countries in moving forward their malaria control scale-up.
The meeting was hosted by the African Union (AU). AU Ambassador Madame Masri welcomed over 70 Board Members, Alternates and Delegates including Health Ministers of Benin, Cambodia, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Mali, Niger, Tanzania and Uganda.
The 12th Board elected a new Chair and Vice Chair: Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghabreyesus, Minister of Health for Ethiopia and Dr Alan Court, Director of Programme Division, UNICEF, respectively. They replace Prof Eyitayo Lambo (MOH Nigeria) who served as Chairperson for two years and Kevin Starace, UN Foundation, former Board Vice Chair. Prof Lambo's outstanding leadership was recognised during the meeting as was the unstinting commitment of Kevin Starace.

Malaria Consortium Announces New Innovation Grants for Malaria Advocacy in Africa
London, 9 May 2007: The Malaria Consortium is launching new innovation grants for malaria advocacy by African organizations in Africa. These Grants will support ideas and partnerships that aim to reach new audiences in creative ways and tackle difficult issues such as equity, transparency and accountability in Africa. Audiences could include decision makers at national or regional levels, politicians, media persons, ministries, international organizations or local leaders. These grants also aim to encourage the engagement of artists to amplify advocacy messages in African countries.

Global Fund to Seek $6-8 billion per Year by 2010
Geneva, 27 April 2007: The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria will need to at least triple in size by 2010 – reaching a spending target of $6 billion per year – to meet projected demand, the Fund’s Board agreed today. Further increased demand from developing countries for Global Fund financing could potentially raise this figure to $8 billion.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka Sings to Roll Back Malaria
Geneva 24 April, 2007: On the eve of Africa Malaria Day, South African singing sensation Yvonne Chaka Chaka rallied staff at the headquarters of the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAIDS in Geneva to accelerate progress on malaria control. Chaka Chaka, a long-time champion of women and children's issues and a UNICEF Regional Spokesperson on Malaria, inspired an audience of over 200 to move their feet and raise their voices against malaria.

Roll Back Malaria Partners set ambitious financial targets for 19 African countries fighting malaria
Geneva April 23, 2007: On the occasion of Africa Malaria Day - April 25th, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership announced its target to secure a 50% success rate for malaria grant applications globally and 80% success for 19 or more countries in Africa for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria’s seventh round of funding.

RBM consultation with Ministers of Health
The RBM Partnership held three events in Johannesburg from 10-12 April with Ministers of Health and other top officials attending the African Union Conference of Ministers of Health. The 7 member states of IGAD and 15 member states of ECOWAS were briefed on provision of a coordinated country support plan for Global Fund applications and the implementation of a Global Subsidy mechanism to purchase ACTs. Elections for representatives to the RBM Board also took place.

RBM malaria endemic country constituency consultation
3 April, Cameroun - 9 Ministers of Health from the 11 countries of the Economic Community of Central African States met in Douala for joint strategizing on malaria control. The Honourable Minister of Health of Cameroun was re-elected as a member of the RBM Board, representing the subregion for a further 2 year term.

Global Malaria Community Kick Starts Campaign to Secure Additional Resources
Roll Back Malaria, the global partnership to fight malaria, has launched a campaign to improve the quality of malaria proposals from sub-Saharan African countries to the Global Fund. In 2006, just over one-quarter of all malaria control proposals submitted to the Global Fund from sub-Saharan African countries were approved for financing. The recently formed RBM Harmonization Working Group, consisting of representatives from UN agencies, donors, civil society, foundations, and African countries, is leading the campaign to support over 20 applicant countries with the proposal process prior to the July 4, 2007 submission deadline.

Experts Discuss Malaria Research Strengthening in Africa
Brazzaville, 26 March 2007 -- Experts, researchers and malaria control programme managers are meeting in Brazzaville from 26-30 March under the auspices of the Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM), the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa. The five-day meeting brings together researchers, implementers, as well as WHO and its partners to exchange information on MIM-supported malaria research; discuss critical needs in capacity for malaria research, and identify mechanisms for strengthening MIM’s role in supporting research capacity in Africa.

New Simple to Use Drug Against Malaria
The non-profit Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) and Sanofi-Aventis have developed a new once-a-day fixed-dose combination of artesunate and amodiaquine (ASAQ) to treat malaria. The drug will be available for use throughout sub-Saharan Africa and is suitable for patients of all ages, including children - the most at-risk population. ASAQ is a quality non-patented product.

Lancement du projet "les femmes Soroptimistes font reculer le Paludisme au Benin"
Dans le cadre de ce projet, le Soroptimist International s'est associé avec l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) pour protéger les femmes enceintes et les enfants de moins de 5 ans de la commune de Zé, située à une quarantaine de kilomètres de Cotonou, en leur fournissant des moustiquaires imprégnées d'insecticide longue durée.
Environ 286 000 dollars serviront à l'achat de ce matériel. Ce projet est un bon exemple de cooperation entre une organisation comme les femmes Soroptimist International, l'OMS et le gouvernement du Bénin.

Africa: New Friends of the Global Fund Branch
Friends of the Global Fund Africa inaugurated its Board of Directors in Kigali, in February, under the theme 'Africans Taking Responsibility and Achieving Results in the Fight against AIDS, TB and Malaria.' Friends Africa was founded in order to create and sustain visibility and awareness for the Global Fund across the African continent, as well as to build political and financial support for the organization. Friends Africa joins Friends organizations in the U.S., Japan and Europe as nongovernmental advocates on behalf of the Global Fund.

Roll Back Malaria Rwanda consultation, 12 February
Roll Back Malaria (RBM) partners in Rwanda held a meeting on key achievements and challenges for national malaria control. Dr Awa Marie Coll-Seck, Executive Director of the RBM Partnership, briefed the national RBM committee on new partnership mechanisms to support country plans, including Global Fund round 7 proposal support. Rwanda's Minister of Health, Dr Jean-Damascene Ntawukuliryayo, as well as the WHO, USAID and NGOs Representatives participated in the meeting.

Global Subsidy for ACTs Agreed in Amsterdam
Experts and policy makers agreed on 19 January that a global subsidy for artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) should be put into place as soon as possible to make effective malaria treatments affordable and accessible to all. Hosted by the Dutch Government, the high level RBM Finance and Resources Working Group meeting included representatives from GFATM, PMI, WB, UNITAID, WHO, UNICEF and the Gates Foundation as well as endemic and donor countries, foundations, NGOs and the private sector. It was anticipated that the resources required to back such a subsidy (between US$ 80-100million in 2008 and around US$ 250m yearly from 2009 onwards) could be secured before 2008 and that potential risks, such as market distortion, could be mitigated by ongoing and effective monitoring.

A Well-Coordinated Child Survival Campaign for Rwanda
The delivery of long-lasting insecticide treated nets (LLINs) during a measles vaccination campaign, last September, has proven to be a cost effective way to rapidly increase coverage and protect under five year old from malaria. The integrated campaign has been successful in all aspects - from financing, procurement and custom clearance, through estimation needs, transportation, secure storage, and crowd management during distribution. 1.3 million nets were distributed to 2000 vaccination points nationwide.

2nd Harmonization Working Group Meeting, 15 - 16 January, Geneva
The meeting focused on developing a 2007 plan to help countries make the required impact to roll back malaria. The plan indicates how to move proven interventions to scale. More specifically it identifies terms of references for country validation missions and outlines a country support strategy for Global Fund Round 7 proposals. Missions are already being planned to Mozambique, Zambia and other countries.

2nd CARN Annual Meeting, 19 January, Gabon
The RBM sub-regional Network of Partners for Central Africa (CARN) met in Libreville, Gabon on 19 January 2007. This meeting was an opportunity to update partners on recent developments within the partnership and to develop the annual joint workplan in support of countries. The meeting also outlined best strategies and actions for a coordinated implementation of priorities. The improvement of countries' performance in absorbing current Global Fund and other grants as well as gap analysis and validation of existing country business plans are pressing issues.

1st Meeting of the Malaria Advocacy Working Group, 10 - 11 Jan 07, London
The first Malaria Advocacy Working Group Meeting took place 10-11 January, and was hosted by GSK in London. The MAWG replaces the Global Advocacy Task Force and will provide strategic counsel to the Partnership with timely, accurate information on opportunities for effective advocacy; and ensure wide dissemination of accurate information on current resource allocations to inform the malaria community of current status and allow accountability by both donors and implementers.
