Make a difference in the fight against malaria
What is malaria?
Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease – but it kills thousands every day and more than 1 million people every year.
Transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes, malaria strikes sub-Saharan Africa the hardest – the continent accounts for 90% of malaria deaths in the world.
Malaria transmission occurs in more than 100 countries today. Of the 203 countries sending athletes to the Olympics this month, almost half suffer the impact of malaria.
What is the solution to this disease?
One of the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent the spread of malaria is to provide insecticide-treated bed nets to communities where malaria is endemic. These long-lasting nets cost just US$ 10 each and work by creating a protective barrier against mosquitoes at night, when most transmissions occur.
Widespread community use of insecticide-treated nets provokes a decline in the mosquito population, which helps to protect those who do not sleep under nets.
At the same time, malaria can be treated with effective medicines that cost on average just $US 2.00 per treatment course, and major research and development initiatives are identifying promising new therapies and vaccine candidates.
These and other efforts have already proven their success. In recent years, countries such as Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, and Rwanda have made bed nets and medicines available for free to their at-risk populations. As a result, these countries have seen dramatic decreases in the numbers of malaria cases and deaths.
What is the Roll Back Malaria Partnership?
The Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) was launched in 1998 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the World Bank to intensify and coordinate nternational efforts to control malaria. Today, the Roll Back Malaria Partnership has expanded to become the leading global public-private venture for mobilizing action, raising resources, forging consensus and coordinating actors in the worldwide fight against malaria.
RBM partners work together to meet one of the Millennium Development Goals : that malaria will not be a major cause of death or an impediment to social and economic development by the year 2015.
What can you do to make a difference?
You can be a part of the solution.
You can make a financial contribution to one of the many non-profit organizations:
Malaria No MoreYour gift to Malaria No More will be used to purchase long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets, distribute them to at-risk populations in Africa, and provide education on their proper use. |
The Global Fund100% of your donation to the Global Fund will go to the Global Fund and to life saving programs around the world to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. |
Against Malaria Foundation100% of your donation to the Against Malaria Foundation buys long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets. The Against Malaria Foundation ensures that the nets end up over heads and beds and they demonstrate that has happened. |
SurfAidYour donation to Surfaid International will go to support community-based health programmes in the Mentawai and Nias, two malaria-endemic islands off the coast of Indonesia. |
Nets for LifeYour donation to Nets for Life will be used to buy long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets, deliver them to at-risk populations, and train community leaders to teach malaria prevention and treatment methods. |
Nothing But NetsYour donation to the United Nations Foundation's Nothing but Nets campaign will be used to purchase long-lasting insecticide treated mosquito nets, distribute them to at-risk populations, and provide education on their proper use. |
Malaria ConsortiumMalaria Consortium is dedicated to delivering effective prevention and treatment to people in Africa and Asia. The new projects delivered by Malaria Consortium would not be possible without the generous donations of the general public. |
