BACKGROUND

The general health profile of the four countries is characterised by:

  • High infant & under-five mortality rates
  • High population growth & fertility rates
  • Low life expectancy
  • High prevalence of endemic communicable diseases (malaria, acute respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea, etc)
  • HIV/AIDS/ and other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis and meningitis
