East Africa Roll Back Malaria Network (EARN)

The East Africa Roll Back Malaria Network (EARN) coordinates partner support on technical and operational issues for going to scale with effective malaria control interventions to 13 East African countries:

  5. Ethiopia
  6. Kenya
  7. Rwanda
  8. Somalia
  9. South Sudan
  10. Sudan
  11. Tanzania
  12. Uganda
  13. Yemen

Founded in 2002, the EARN has been used as a pathfinder in determining the appropriate mechanisms and functions for the sub-regional co-ordination of RBM support to countries. The EARN network is coordinated by a team of elected members, for which the financial support for much of this work is provided by their parent organization. In addition, the network is facilitated by an RBM focal point funded by the RBM partnership and hosted by UNICEF ESARO in Nairobi.

18 -22 August 2013: The 14th Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Network (EARN) Annual Meeting

EARN held its 14th General Assembly meeting in Khartoum, Sudan, from 18th to 22nd August 2013, under the theme for World Malaria Day 2013: "Invest in the future: Defeat Malaria” in a bid to review the progress of country roadmaps towards full implementation of the Global Malaria Action Plan (GMAP) in East Africa, in the last 800 days towards the end of 2015 goals. Delegates to the meeting and the RBM Secretariat discussed various issues including updates to country malaria control roadmaps, management of Artemisinin resistance containment, and management of vector resistance to insecticides used for malaria vector control.

2013 first quarter Extended EARN ECC and NMCP Managers Meeting The first quarter extended Eastern Africa Regional Network (EARN) was attended by NMCP managers representing 11/13 malaria endemic countries and all representatives of all EARN constituencies.

17-18 December 2012: 2012 last quarter Extended EARN ECC and NMCP Managers Meeting

2012 last quarterly Extended EARN ECC and NMCP Managers Meeting The RBM-EARN held its 2012 last quarterly Coordinating Committee (ECC) meeting to take stock of performance of implementation of the network workplan and to discuss issues related to the inception of cross boarder malaria control initiative in East Africa. The ECC meeting was extended to all EARN NMCP managers.

3-7 September 2012: 13th Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Network (EARN) Annual Meeting

 13th Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Network (EARN) Annual MeetingEARN held its 13th General Assembly meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, from 3rd to 7th September 2012, under the theme: "Sustain Gains, Save Lives: Invest in Malaria" and the slogan: "Malaria Control for Sustainable Development in Eastern Africa!” to review the progress of country roadmaps towards full implementation of the Global Malaria Action Plan (GMAP) in East Africa. Delegates to the meeting and the RBM Secretariat addressed issues that included updates on country malaria control roadmaps, management of Artemisinin resistance containment, and management of malaria vector insecticide resistance. The meeting also reviewed the status of community management of malaria and M & E surveillance systems, AMFm transition planning, and the need to strengthen in-country and crossborder malaria partnerships as a way to improve the use of an already dwindling resource through the creation of synergistic partnerships within countries and in the sub-region.

12-16 February 2012: EARN extended ECC-NMCP Managers meeting

EARN extended ECC-NMCP Managers meetingEARN held its first extended ECC-NMCP Managers meeting in Kigali, Rwanda from 12th to 16th February 2012. The main objectives of the meeting were to evaluate the network performance, progress and constraints encountered during the implementation of 2011, lessons learnt and endorse the PWP 2012. The meeting also reviewed various issues pertaining implementation of countries roadmaps towards GMAP 2015 targets and milestones in East Africa and decided on critical support to countries to overcome bottlenecks during the process.

The meeting was attended by 178 participants from 21 East and Southern African countries malaria control programmes (Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Comoros, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania (including Zanzibar), Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe) attended the meeting to review country programme implementation and develop the roadmap towards achieving the 2010 targets.
