Objectives for Africa Malaria Day activities:
- Remind governments of their commitments to the Abuja targets;
- Encourage collaboration at all levels (e.g., Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses and Malaria);
- Foster popular education, building on people’s existing malaria knowledge to address issues that are relevant to them in controlling the disease;
- Advocate for policies and strategies that promote the early recognition of symptoms and the treatment of malaria for all, but especially pregnant women, young mothers, babies and children;
- Lobby governments and other partners to provide affordable insecticide-treated nets for vulnerable groups.
Suggested activities could include:
- Demonstration of use and re-treatment of insecticide-treated nets;
- Distribution of pre-packaged anti-malarial drugs;
- Singing, drama, dancing, drawing, writing or similar activities organized in classrooms, local communities, and national events;
- Poster and essay competitions with winning submissions showcased at national or local community centers;
- Collaboration with local celebrities such as musicians to host a malaria-control concert or other event;
- Meetings with ministers and opinion leaders, including open fora that engage children and adults in discussions about malaria;
- "Malaria-Free Zone" competitions, highlighting and rewarding communities that are engaged in malaria prevention activities;
- Community group discussions to encourage sharing of culturally appropriate knowledge about the causes and treatment of malaria;
- Production and distribution of relevant communication packages targeted at community members such as opinion leaders and caregivers.
