Objectives for Africa Malaria Day activities:

  • Remind governments of their commitments to the Abuja targets;
  • Encourage collaboration at all levels (e.g., Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses and Malaria);
  • Foster popular education, building on people’s existing malaria knowledge to address issues that are relevant to them in controlling the disease;
  • Advocate for policies and strategies that promote the early recognition of symptoms and the treatment of malaria for all, but especially pregnant women, young mothers, babies and children;
  • Lobby governments and other partners to provide affordable insecticide-treated nets for vulnerable groups.

Suggested activities could include:

  • Demonstration of use and re-treatment of insecticide-treated nets;
  • Distribution of pre-packaged anti-malarial drugs;
  • Singing, drama, dancing, drawing, writing or similar activities organized in classrooms, local communities, and national events;
  • Poster and essay competitions with winning submissions showcased at national or local community centers;
  • Collaboration with local celebrities such as musicians to host a malaria-control concert or other event;
  • Meetings with ministers and opinion leaders, including open fora that engage children and adults in discussions about malaria;
  • "Malaria-Free Zone" competitions, highlighting and rewarding communities that are engaged in malaria prevention activities;
  • Community group discussions to encourage sharing of culturally appropriate knowledge about the causes and treatment of malaria;
  • Production and distribution of relevant communication packages targeted at community members such as opinion leaders and caregivers.
