Sindo, Suba District is located on the shore of Lake Victoria. It is one of the poorest districts in Kenya whose main income comes from fishing activities. It is an area with stable endemic malaria. The major malaria vectors include Anopheles gambiae s.s Giles, An. arabiensis Patton and An. funestus Giles. Malaria and HIV/AIDS are the two major diseases affecting this community and therefore are drawback to the welfare of these people.

A mosquito net behind them, (left-right) Felismino Mutitire sits on a bed with his son and his wife, Flora, who is breastfeeding their 18-month-old baby, in what remains of their home in the town of Chokwe in the southern part of the province of Gaza, one of the regions most severely affected by the flooding. Together with their two other children and their daughter-in-law, they spent three days on a rooftop with no food or safe water at the height of the flooding, followed by 10 days sheltering under trees. Home again, they are trying to reclaim their possessions and land from the mud. Their daughter-in-law has malaria and their 14-year-old daughter, Patiencia, spends her day fetching safe water from one of the few undamaged wells, several hours walking distance from their home.

An unaccompanied boy, Seragio, who is sick with malaria, is interviewed by a woman social worker, who rests a hand on his forehead as he lies on a blanket in a tent, in a camp for some 40,000 people displaced by the recent flooding, near the town of Chacalane in the province of Gaza, one of the most severely affected regions. Seragio became separated from his family during the flooding. He thinks that his parents may be dead and does not know where his siblings are. Several unaccompanied children live together in a few tents in this camp. UNICEF is providing technical assistance to help reunite unaccompanied children with their families.
By mid-March 2000 in Mozambique, relief and rehabilitation efforts were well under way in response to the worst flooding in 50 years that hit the country in late February, affecting at least seven provinces, causing some 500 deaths and leaving more than 300,000 people homeless or without a livelihood. The extensive damage to agricultural land as well as to the transportation, water and sanitation and housing infrastructures also heightened the risk of malaria or cholera outbreak and required immediate food, health and water and sanitation assistance. Working with government ministries, other UN agencies and NGOs, UNICEF is coordinating the water and sanitation emergency response; supporting a vaccination campaign targeting tens of thousands of children and adults in the Limpopo River valley; providing essential drugs, oral rehydration salts (ORS) packets and educational materials; promoting community mobilization campaigns in health and hygiene to prevent the spread of disease; and supporting the rehabilitation of schools in affected areas.

A three-year-old boy toddler, Doto, sick with malaria, sits on a table as he is examined by a woman doctor at a health centre in the village of Kibaha, 70 km west of Dar-es-Salaam, the capital. UNICEF provides vaccines, essential drugs and equipment.
In spite of significant gains in the previous two decades in the United Republic of Tanzania, a country of 32 million people, immunization rates for children under two years of age against the six vaccine-preventable childhood diseases declined to an average of 72 per cent by the year 2000. Malaria is the leading cause of child mortality and, combined with malnutrition, is a major cause of under-five morbidity.
